MADEIRA ISLAND

Madeira Island

Discovered in 1420 by João Gonçalves Zarco, the island owes its name “Madeira” (wood) to the first settlers that had to set fire to the abundant virgin forest in order to penetrate inland. Today, the people of the island make use of every patch of land available, and wine, bananas and exotic flowers are an important part of the economy. However, it is tourism that since 1964, when the first commercial flight landed on the island, that is Madeira’s main source of income. Its year-round mild weather has long attracted many famous visitors such as Christopher Columbus, Sissi the Empress of Austria, Charles I, king of Austria who was buried there, Sir Winston Churchill and George Bernard Shawn, just to name a few.

FUNCHAL

In the 15th century, Madeira produced a lot of sugar and Funchal quickly became famous among merchants from different countries. However, As the sugar trade declined, the people soon realised that wine could be vital to their economy. Many of the monuments created during the 15th, 16th and 17th century are still standing today; the Cathedral, the old Custom House, Saint Claire’s Convent, the Incarnation and Holy Body Chapels etc. While visiting the city of Funchal, you must also find the time to see the museums, There is a wide offer of restaurants and bars, as well as excellent shopping and entertainment.
