Douro Valley - Portugal
The Douro river and its tributaries, excellent for fishing and water sports, are the focal point of a region that is diversified and rich in its natural, architectural and historic heritage.
A majestic landscape which is at once calm and rustic reveals, among its steep slopes and deep valleys dug into the shale rocks, estates rising above the large terraced vineyards like solitary churches or places of worship.
During tours, the traveller has the opportunity to appreciate traditional local handicrafts, various hand-made and popular items, such as baskets, carpets, black pottery, and gastronomy with its regional dishes and sweets.
The Port Wine Route is a recommended tour to get to know the Duriense Region. This region is divided into three sub-regions having fluctuating climates, but always rigorous winters and hot, dry summers. It is spread over nearly 250,000 hectares between Barqueiros and the Spanish border, with 40,000 hectares of vineyards.
This fascinating landscape of estates and vineyards, product of a perfect harmony among nature, time, and the hand of man, yields a harvest of the best nectar in Portugal – Port wine – internationally famous and appreciated as one of our greatest national treasures.
